I hang out with Phil Fuentes pretty regularly - it's good to have someone around that I've known for over 15 years to talk to and tell funny stories and eat food. So, Phil and I were in town hanging out after eating amazing Mexican food, when we run into a friend of his, Zeke. Amazing entertainment all around. Zeke had stories about getting in fights with a guy while he's getting tattooed (the guy he fought was the tattooer), and making fun of his massage therapist, plus other amazing tales. Most I've laughed in a while.

I was lucky enough to be able to go to NYC this past weekend. Well, actually, for a day and a half. Left on the boat from MV on Saturday at 12 noon. AFter dealing with the perpetual traffic jam that is I-95 in Connecticut, I arrived in Queens about 6. I called Kitzel, who was in town as well for different things, and met him and Meredith at VP for some amazing vegan food. I got the fried tofu rolls, which I remember getting there the first time I went to VP2go back in '91. I remember that we were freaked out about them cuz we thought they were really chicken for sure, because the fried tofu skin was so crispy and Shake-n-Bake-ish. So I got those plus some lemon-pepper "duck" which was amazing. While we were there Toby and Moon Morse and their son Maximus came by for dinner, so it was cool to see them there, because I wasn't able to stay for the H2O show the next night, since I had to get back to ferry to make it back to the island the next night. We left there and met up with Rene - Patrick's friend from Germany who was in True Blue. They took off seperately to hang, and I went to the Grammercy Theater to see Sick Of It All and Bane. Saw the Bane dudes as soon as I got there and hung with them, and then watched Capital from Long Island, who are different and cool and sound like a quirky SoCal punk sort of thing. Good stuff. Bane were amazing as always, and SOIA were still dynamic as hell, like they've always been. They played for a long time, and tons of amazing old and new songs. They are obviously so tight and still have an amazing time playing. I was going to try and see Craig and Lou afterwards to say hey, but couldn't find them downstairs after the show. Reggie from Auburn and Mike Attack were there - just like the last time I was at a show at the Grammercy, so it was cool to see them and hang out afterwards. I was exhausted after that, and so I headed back to Queens to sleep at Grez and Claire's. They hadn't returned home from Manhattan, so I just climbed into my truck and slept on the futon I have in the back. Slept like a baby. I was parked in front of Grez and Claire's apartment, and they saw my truck there when they got back at 4 am. When I met up with Grez later the next day in town, he told me they opened the back of my truck and tried to wake me up, but I was snorin' soundly and didn't hear them. I brought a framed photo of DJ and Elijah that is going to be in a salon show in NY in July, and so when I got up about 8:30 am, I grabbed the photo, took the train into town, and stopped by my friend Dave and Cat's apartment on 3rd St. We unpacked the photo and hung it temporarily in their place until it gets installed in July, and then headed to Kate's joint for vegan eggs benedict and good conversation. After walking back to their place afterwards, I met up with Grez and Mike Shea and Salty Dave at 7A at 7th and A. Get it? Conversation there entailed talk about smelly fingers, getting little sleep, Mike Shea using big words and Salty Dave's previous night's party adventure. We just hung out in front of the restaurant after they all ate, and met up with Kitzel and continued the scintillating conversation. I had to split in order to make back to my truck in Queens so I could get back to the boat to make my reservation at 8:30 that night. Had to miss the H2O, Hazen Street, Cruel Hand show that night. Bummed. Pics to come tomorrow.

So, I know that some of you are going to laugh, but this is where I'm living this summer. I rent this from my friend Ryan Begley's parents on the island. This is just my bedroom - I use the main house where they live for everything else, obviously (kitchen, bathroom, etc.) No, I don't have a latrine dug behind back, or a solar shower hanging from the tree next to the shed. Anyway, I get wireless from the house, and I have more conveniences than you would expect in the shed (small refrigerator and microwave, plenty of room for my summer stuff, and room to draw, actually)

Like I said in a previous post, Rick Coyne paid me a visit on the island. Rick was my best friend in the Navy, and he's the only one who I have been able to keep in touch with from that time since. Rick has done more in his life than ten average people - worked on a dairy farm, certified master welder, Golden Gloves boxer, skier, mountain climber, ice climber, bicycle racer, plus he was just recently working in China (and all around Asia) working for a company that installs custom pipe systems for drug companies, etc. Now, he's starting an import/export company in China. Oh, plus, he survived a plane hijacking when he was going to boot camp from his home in Vermont. I won't go into more personal things about Rick, but he was my first best friend. He has such a outgoing and welcoming personality, and even though I was a weird, sheltered young kid in the Navy, he still befriended me and taught me how to box and invited me to come to his home in Vermont when we went on leave. We've had so many adventures when we were in the Navy, and after, but we hadn't been able to see each other for 20 years, until he came to visit last week. Here's to you Rick - you're an amazing person and a true brother.

The week before I got to the island, I showed up in Syracuse the day after leaving Interlochen, and the next day everyone was going to Ithaca to have a picnic/baby shower for Bea and Guav. The weather was perfect, and we just goofed off and ate amazing food (spring rolls that Sue made were the best thing every), and then took a walk down the trail by an amazing gorge. It was a perfect day with friends and family. Click on any photo to see more in the set at my flickr page.

I'm on Martha's Vineyard for the summer. I'm living in a cool "cottage" in the yard next to my friend Ryan's parents' house. I have my own little space, and use the kitchen and bathroom in the main house. Grez tattooed Ryan once in that shack. I've hung out briefly with Phil Fuentes and Trance the other day, and went on different island adventures with my dear friend Rick Coyne - my best friend from the Navy. Haven't seen that dude in over 20 years. He lives and works in China now, and we have just recently re-connected after losing track of each other for a while. It was so great to see him and find out what has been going on with him in the past few years - some good and some bad. I'll post pics later. pics of Blacklisted and Have Heart from the Burning Fight show are up on my flickr page. Obviously, I've got much more, so I'll be putting up pics of Damnation, Bane, Threadbare, Guilt, Reach the Sky and others in teh coming days, plus some photos from Guav and Bea's baby shower/picnic thing. Come to the island and visit me and go to the beach, preferably on a day that isn't like the past few (cloudy and cold).

I have almost 1,000 photos from the Burning Fight show in Chicago last weekend. I'll be working on them next week, and put them up. As some of you know there are already amazing videos up of some of the show. Bane's set is at: http://hate5six.com/player.php?album=90589 I'm stage diving at 31:08 of their set. The first time I've done that in almost 10 years, and of course I lose my glasses and they got broken. Thanks to Grimes and Caitlin and Peter for helping me at the show, and to Brian Peterson of course, for writing the book.
